Paddock description

The paddocks are next to each other on a south facing slope (~3-4%)

The measurement sites were established approximately 20 m on either side of the fenceline.

Soils

Yellow Kurosol: Sandy loam topsoil 10 -40 cm; bleached, structureless A2 horizon; clay subsoil.

2010 - present Pasture:

native perennial grass-based pasture

Fertiliser: annual application of 90 kg/ha superphosphate

superphosphate fertiliser applied as required to maintain 25 mg P/kg soil (Colwell)††

Stock: grazed as part of normal farm operations

stocked continuously with 7-9 Merino ewes/ha, lambing in late July
progeny weaned off the block in December

2007 - 2009 Pasture:

native perennial grass-based pasture

  Fertiliser: unfertilised

superphosphate fertiliser applied to maintain 25 mg P/kg soil (Colwell)††

  Stock: rotationally grazed by landholder

stocked continuously with 7-9 Merino ewes/ha, lambing in late July
progeny weaned off the block in December

1993 - 2006 Pasture:

native perennial grass-based pasture

Fertiliser: unfertilised

superphosphate fertiliser applied to maintain 25 mg P/kg soil (Colwell)
molybdenum applied every 3 to 5 years up to 2002

Stock:

stocked continuously with 6 mature Merino wethers/ha

stocked continuously with 12-15 mature Merino wethers/ha

1976 - 1993 Pasture:

native perennial grass-based pasture

Fertiliser: unfertilised
   

Pasture composition in the order of 35% native perennial grass (mainly wallaby grass, Austrodanthonia spp., and weeping grass, Microlaena stipoides), 5% other naturalised perennial grasses, 30% legume (mainly subterranean clover), 20% annual grass and 10% broadleaf weeds when sampled in early spring.

††  Fertiliser rates (single super) have averaged out at 55 kg/ha/yr over the last 15 years. In 3 year ( 2007, 2011, 2014) there was no fertiliser spread due to the high soil Colwell P at the previous November sampling.
